Ten Images from 2015

Fellow Danish Fujifilm ambassador and amazing photographer Klaus Bo recently tagged me on Facebook in a “post 10 pictures from 2015” game. That is as good a reason as any to look back on an exciting and busy 2015. I have already posted many images from 2015, especially music images, so I have selected the 10 images that mean a lot – or have stories to them that mean a lot to me personally. Not the best necessarily, whatever that means, but some of my favourite memories. Here are my ten from 2015:

Charlene and my father, Nordjylland, Denmark

Charlene and my father, Nordjylland, Denmark

Charlene and I spent 4 amazing days at my father’s place in September 2015, this image is shot in his garden. It is part of a wonderful story arc of rediscovering and reconnecting to my family history, from Finding Carl Jensen in 2014 in Britton, South Dakota to visiting all my childhood stomping grounds in Nordjylland, Denmark. Charlene made an incredible Landscapes of Memory story related to this. Much more about this project coming up in 2016.

Suspekt on Red Bull Studios live stage, Distortion in Copenhagen, Denmark

Suspekt on Red Bull Studios live stage, Distortion in Copenhagen, Denmark

I am somewhat addicted to epicness, and working on the Red Bull stage at Distortion festival in Copenhagen was a peak in this quest. The 30 – 40,000 people partying on the street of Blegdamsvej made the road disappear completely and it seemed like the buildings would soon have to give way too. This image is a lot more dramatic than the actual event, but when Suspekt took the stage and flares were lit in the crowd, I captured the adrenaline rushed excitement I was feeling at the time.

Charlene, Amager, Denmark

Charlene, Amager, Denmark

The magic one, the love of my life. This is a rare capture of Charlene relaxed, smiling and somewhat unaware that I am still shooting. She does not like being in front of the camera all, usually she makes faces at me (I have a great collection of expressions! sometimes they come with finger gestures too!) or poses. This candid moment, this brief nano second happened after a posed shot, and I must have said something silly as usual!

Courtesy on Red Bull Music Academy stage, Distortion festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

Courtesy on Red Bull Music Academy stage, Distortion festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

Courtesy is an awesome Danish techno DJ and music journalist. This image I did select because it is one of my best of 2015. I will add to that and say that I am especially happy that this portrait of Courtesy at work turned out so well. I work in photography and in electronic music, and both industries are heavily dominated by males, something that needs to change. It is 2016 soon, we gotta do much better. I admire and support all the female artists.

Charlene, Penang, Malaysia

Charlene, Penang, Malaysia

While we do travel a fair bit, when we went to Penang in July 2015, it was really the first time after 7 months or so of business trips went somewhere just to go there, to explore, wander, shoot, write and take a break. This image represents the wonderful feeling of wandering the back alleys of a new town at night.

DJ Copyflex and photographers in Fujifilm Nightclub workshop at Photomeetup, Copenhagen, Denmark

“Could you run some sort of music photography workshop and can we create a nightclub environment at a big photo fair?” This was the wonderful and crazy question that my dear friend Ib Thordal from Fujifilm Nordic asked me. Of course I was instantly hooked. 3 months of planning went into this, many amazing people contributed and the crazy thing is it worked! We ran 8 workshops in a row with the kick-ass awesome DJ Copyflex on the wheels of steel, we had more than 100 people through the door and it literally was a dream come true. Oh and I got to DJ again. Read much more about Fujifilm nightclub on my blog.

Charlene, Vesterbro, Copenhagen, Denmark

For all my chasing epicness, some of the most magic moments are small candid moments. This is in Copenhagen, a Friday night, the cool projections on the building are from an art installation and I do not think Charlene noticed I took this picture at all. I love this one.

Bambounou on Red Bull Music Academy stage, Distortion festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

Bambounou on Red Bull Music Academy stage, Distortion festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

I will let you in on a secret, ok it is no secret, I really want it to be me in a picture like this. I want to play! So when I shoot this, I am simply thinking “how would I like to be portrayed if it was me?”. In this case, “I” wanted to be portrayed as a saving-the-world DJ Star-Lord captain, piloting a ship into a space battle with lasers firing. So that is how I chose to portray Bambounou. Fire the turbo-lasers.

Skipper Røvskum, Strøm festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

Skipper Røvskum, Strøm festival, Copenhagen, Denmark

These guys are legendary and so is their first performance, back at Strøm festival 2012. I shot that infamous event back in 2012 and it was great to catch up with the “Skippers” again in 2015, here on a warm and wonderful late Summer evening during Strøm festival at Amager Strandpark. It reminds me of a wonderful august in Copenhagen and it is definitely a Copenhagen and music image unlike any other.

Dehiwala, Sri Lanka

Dehiwala, Sri Lanka

I will end with a picture from our recent 4 weeks stay in Sri Lanka. It was actually the first time in 18 months that we landed in a country that neither of us had been to and you cannot beat nor replicate the excitement of a blank canvas, an unexplored place. Much more pictures to come from this trip.

2016, I be at the ready

Hope you enjoyed this tiny selection of the tens of thousands of images I made this year. I cannot wait for more adventures 2016 – Happy New Year to you all.

  1. Wonderful pictures! My favourites:
    nr 1, the light and the composition are amazing;
    nr 7, fantastic b&w;
    nr 10, makes me wonder “what’s happening? where is he going?”
    Thanks for sharing, and… I hope to see more in 2016!
    Happy New Year

  2. That picture from Dehiwala is fantastic! And Røvskum is an invincible band name (I’m Swedish, so I know what it means). Maybe I will hear the Skippers some day.

  3. Really great images and stories! Those portraits of Charlene and Courtesy are indeed excellent. Also, it’s nice to hear some background about Landscapes of Memory: I really enjoyed that series of photographs.
