The Bass, the highway bridge and the Kraken

Ohoi! There's bass under the bridge

Ohoi! There’s bass under the bridge (and notice the amount of Funktion One speakers)

They call it Bass under the Arch. Every year a gathering takes place in Copenhagen as thousands of ravers assemble under the arch of a raised highway. They are here to worship electronic beats and low frequencies. The event commences at 3pm and as the sub-bass enters our bodies, it becomes clear: the Ohoi! crew has us all, resistance is futile.

The day features a wide selection of Danish Bass music, DJs and artists rotate every 30 minutes and we are treated to everything from dubstep to dancehall, tribal, break beats, viking cumbia, uk garage, and genres I am not familiar with. The common thread is earth shattering sub-bass. I am a little surprised the highway bridge still stands, and am certain that the Kraken has been awakened in the icy Nordic depths.

It is bone rattling. Charlene and I covered the entire event for the Ohoi! crew, which at times meant standing on or next to the large subwoofers. I think a rib or two of mine may still be out of alignment.

I love this event, the music and atmosphere are wonderful. The light can be really tricky for photography, but the bridge is a great venue and the energy is fantastic. I was shooting behind DJ 2000F of the Ohoi! crew as he played the last tune, looking in awe at the sea of people surrendering to the music of the moment.

If you are in Copenhagen around mid July and suddenly feel as if the Kraken has awakened, do not fear. Follow your feet as they lead you to the bass, and join the Ohoi! crew under the bridge!

This great “Bas under Buen 2013” video by Georg Rasmussen shows the event well.

  1. Great photos-
I wish I could hear the music-
The color setting on your Selecta Kanan picture is awesome.
Did you use any special settings ?
    or editing programs?

    Thanks-

    1. Thanks very much, glad you like it. Yes I wish my pictures had music as well and earthquake sub-bass. All the pictures are developed only in Lightroom using my girlfriend Charlene’s very awesome Lightroom presets, so she gets all the credit 🙂
